I’ve always admired the effortless style of high-end designer pieces, and the Loewe camel hoodie jacket was no exception. With its luxurious brushed wool and unique details, it was the perfect inspiration for my next sewing project. I scored panels of the softest brushed wool from Globetex, and some time ago, I found natural horn buttons on AliExpress. With a skin-colored lining already in my stash, it seemed like the planets had finally aligned when my youngest son dreamed of a hoodie just like Loewe’s!

Pattern Modifications for the Loewe Look
For this project, I started with the Burdastyle pattern . To capture the essence of the Loewe design, I made several modifications:
- Eliminated Chest Pockets: To streamline the silhouette.
- Combined Yokes: Merged the front and back yokes with the bodices for a cleaner look.
- Adjusted Length and Width: Lengthened the body by 5cm and widened the shoulders by 2cm for a more relaxed fit.
- Incorporated Welt Pockets: Replaced the in-seam pockets with front welt pockets using Ryuichiro Shimazaki‘s duffle coat pattern.
- Added a 3-Piece Hood: Also from Shimazaki’s pattern, which, miraculously, fit perfectly into the Burda pattern neckline!

Detailed Sewing Techniques: Bias Binding and Welt Pockets
The ‘making up’ stage involved some meticulous techniques. I opted for bias binding to finish the seams, following Mr. Shimazaki’s instructions. This method, where only one side of the seam is bound and the other trimmed and stitched down, results in a clean, utilitarian look.
- Welt Pocket Construction: I borrowed the process for the welt pockets from Atelier Saison’s excellent YouTube tutorial. Their step-by-step guidance was invaluable!

Custom Detailing: Leather Drawstring Stoppers
For the drawstring eyelets, I initially tried classic zigzag buttonholes, but the results were disappointing. However, following the tutorial as shown in this video, gave the best looking eyelets! Additionally, I drew inspiration from Zegna for the leather drawstring stoppers. Using a genuine leather upholstery sample, I cut, glued, pre-punched, and hand-stitched these custom details.

The Finished Loewe-Inspired Hoodie and the “Tunnel Fit” Inspiration
The final result was a major league fit! As we photographed the finished jacket, we couldn’t help but think of stylish athletes arriving at their games and how their fashionable outfits make headlines. Apparently, ‘tunnel fits‘ are a thing!
I’m thrilled with how this Loewe-inspired hoodie turned out. It was a challenging but rewarding project that allowed me to explore new techniques and create a truly unique piece.
